Patient Room Lay-Out: The new building contains 25 all private patient rooms with 3 critical care (CCU) rooms, 3 labor-delivery-recovery-postpartum (LDRP) rooms, and 19 medical-surgical-pediatric (MSP) rooms. All private patient rooms are key to decreasing the spread of infection in hospitals. The rooms are all like-handed which means that each is set up the same way so that the provider knows exactly where everything is located, i.e. med gasses, IVs, etc. This has been proven to reduce errors and increase patient safety. The design is flexible in that if Kewanee Hospital has a greater number of deliveries on a given day, adjacent MSP rooms can be used with the closing of a door to keep the Family Birthing Center (FBC) a distinct unit. The patient rooms are designed for patient-centered care with space for the patient, family, and provider. The MSP and LDRP rooms are equipped with a private bathroom that includes a shower. All rooms have wireless internet capabilities to allow families the ability to bring their laptops and stay connected to work and loved ones.
Admissions: The outside of the facility includes a covered, drive-up area to allow families to drop-off patients and protect them from the weather. The admissions area includes private offices to allow for privacy of patients during the admitting process. The waiting area is located off of the admissions area and out of hearing distance.
Emergency Department (ED): An ambulance garage will provide privacy and weather protection for patients being brought to the ED via ambulance service. The walk-in ED entrance includes a walk up counter that resembles a clinic to allow for increased safety for staff and patients in the ED. The treatment rooms are all private to provide for security and privacy. A separate room for psychiatric holding provides for the safe treatment and handling of patients with mental illness. To help families experiencing trauma, a separate grieving room is available to give them privacy during difficult times. We will also have a meditation room located close to the emergency department that will give families a quiet place to reflect.
Family Health Clinic: The all new family health clinic was designed for the patient. Rooms provide for privacy and include many healing touches.
Surgical Services: The surgical services department is located close to the main entrance for patient and visitor convenience. The surgery area contains two state-of-the-art operating rooms and endoscopy rooms. The area has been designed for quality and patient safety.
Short Stay/Observation Services: Short stay and observation services are provided out of the ED area. This allows for flexible use of the space and staff. The ED is traditionally busy during the off-hours, while the short stay unit is in service during the day-time hours.
Outpatient Rehabilitation Services: Kewanee Hospital Outpatient Rehabilitation Services is located in the new facility. The staff was given the opportunity to work with building designers design a state of the art rehabilitation gym and treatment area. The staff will no longer have to travel back and forth from the Hospital to Outpatient Rehab and will give them more time to work with the patients.
Technology: Kewanee Hospital has been in the pursuit of an EHR since 1999 when our nursing and ancillary staff first started documenting on the computer. Over the last three years we have upgraded our technological infrastructure to provide the backbone needed to run the increase in technology. Since 2004 Kewanee Hospital has added ChartLink, the ability for physicians to view diagnostic results via their office or home PC, and to sign off on medical records as well as Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE), which provides the physician the ability to place orders and document electronically via any computer. We have implemened an EHR for the Family Health Clinic.
Radiology and Cardiopulmonary: These two key diagnostic departments are located close to the main entrance and have been co-located to allow for sharing of technology. The new facility contains PACS technology (Picture Archiving Communication System), which is the digitizing of images. Eventually Radiology departments will be film-less and the digitized images will be connected to the patient’s electronic healthcare record (EHR).
Conference/Education Center: The conference center includes two meeting rooms with fixed technology. The rooms are located next to the cafeteria and close to the main entrance.
Cafeteria/Family Education Area: The cafeteria is located conveniently past the admissions area towards the back of the facility. It allows scenic views from the dining room and the ability to dine outside in nice weather. Immediately adjacent to the cafeteria is the cyber café, which provide computers and educational material for visitors.
Efficiencies: The new hospital provides for many efficiencies through evidence-based design. The inpatient area is located in a race-track format to provide for flexing of staff and supplies. The patient rooms include a nurse-server, which is a cabinet located outside each patient room and contains needed supplies to prevent nurses from spending a great deal of their time hunting materials. The diagnostic departments are located close to admissions and the emergency department to provide for easy movement of staff and patients. The heating, cooling, and generators are designed for the space, and will be much more energy-efficient. Many efficiencies will be gained by having less space.
