The Kewanee Hospital Auxiliary is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2012-2013 Elizabeth Baethke Memorial Scholarship. This year’s winners are Michelle Newman of Galva and Taylor Garcia of Kewanee. Newman will attend Indiana State University this fall to pursue a degree in Registered Nursing. She then plans to further her education to become a family nurse practitioner. Garcia will be attending Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville in the fall, with plans to become a Pharmacist.
“I would love to continue my education and provide healthcare to our local community,” Newman stated in her application. “My passion is working with children … but being in a rural area, it is more realistic to become a general nurse practitioner to care for patients of all ages. I understand the needs locally and I am excited to further my career.”
“My family sparked my interest in the medical field,” Garcia stated, adding that her mother, uncle, aunt, and grandmother had all worked in the field of medicine. “As a pharmacist, I hope to help others and improve their medical experience as much as possible. I also hope to someday be involved with pharmacy studies that will help to improve medicine. I want to help make medicine the best it can be and help others to the best of my ability.”
Newman and Garcia were each awarded a $700 scholarship for the 2012-2013 school year.
