Kewanee Hospital is pleased to offer Swing Bed Services, a specialized skilled level of care offered to patients who require strengthening prior to returning home from a hospital stay. The program includes inpatient rehabilitation services, infusion therapy, wound care, and pain management. All of the beds on Kewanee Hospital’s Med-Surg-Peds floor are certified as swing beds under Medicare for the provision of skilled services.
“A swing bed is a bed that can be designated as a skilled bed for the purpose of providing skilled care without having to leave Kewanee Hospital,” stated Jackie Kernan, RN, Director of Med-Surg-Peds-Swing Bed Services at Kewanee Hospital. “It gives our patients the chance to fully rehabilitate before returning home. Or if patients have had a medical procedure at another healthcare facility, it gives them the option to come back to Kewanee, near family and friends, to fully recover.”
An individual may qualify for skilled services in a swing bed if his/her diagnosis and treatment plan meet Medicare standards. Daily skilled nursing or rehabilitative services must be required.
“In order to qualify for the Swing Bed program, patients must show progress toward goals that have been established by our staff, and approved by the patient’s physician,” Kernan added. “Length of stay varies from patient to patient based on the individual’s progress.”
KewaneeHospital’s Swing Bed Services program offers all private, handicap accessible patient rooms with bathrooms and zero-level entry showers. Accommodations are available for family member to stay with the patient. Registered Nurses (RNs) and Hospitalists (physicians specialized in the care of inpatients) are on staff 24/7 to consult with the patient and his/her family members.
As a Swing Bed patient, you and your family benefit from weekly conferences with the Family Care Planning Team, including: Patient Advocate, Physical & Occupational Therapists, Registered Dietitian, Registered Nurse, Respiratory Therapist and Speech-Language Pathologist. Social services and discharge planning assistance are also available. Added amenities include room service with patients’ menu choices delivered when they choose, activities, and visits (if the patients choose) from Sunny and Izzy, Kewanee Hospital’s certified pet therapy dogs.
When a patient’s swing bed stay is complete, he/she may be discharged home, to a personal care home, or if longer-term therapy is required, to a skilled nursing facility. Skilled care benefits are available only after a 3-day qualifying hospital staff, and/or within 30 days from discharge. If patients meet the criteria, Medicare will pay 100% up to 20 days except any charges not allowed by Medicare.
