KH Receives Award for Patient Safety and Surgical Care

Kewanee Hospital was recently presented a Certificate of Outstanding Performance Improvement by the IFMC – IL, a quality improvement organization dedicated to health care quality improvement and medical information management for the state of Illinois. Kewanee Hospital was honored for its dedication and commitment to improving patient safety and surgical care.
“We thank all of the staff at Kewanee Hospital for their participation in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) 9th Statement of Work Surgical Care Improvement Projects/Heart Failure Initiative,” stated Mari Baran, RN, BSN, Quality Improvement Facilitator at IFMC-IL. “Your team has worked on improving processes of care to prevent surgical infections and other complications related to surgery and heart failure and your patients are very lucky to have you as their advocates.”
KewaneeHospitalwas recognized for its efforts to dramatically improve performance on the national projects, especially the Surgical Care Improvement (SCIP) and Heart Failure Initiative. SCIP is a large national partnership dedicated to reducing surgical complications. The program includes a number of steps that surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and patients can take to lower the number of surgical problems. The heart failure initiative focuses on medical steps taken to assist and care for patients at high risk of developing heart failure.
“Recognition for quality of care and performance improvement is really something for us to celebrate,” said Margaret Gustafson, Chief Executive Officer at Kewanee Hospital. “It means that we’re making great progress toward our vision of clinical excellence.
